Guandan (掼蛋) is a fast-paced four-player partnership card game from China that combines strategy, teamwork, and escalating power plays. Two players sit opposite each other as partners, using two full decks of cards plus Jokers. The goal is to be the first partnership to get rid of all your cards. Players take turns playing combinations such as singles, pairs, triples, full houses, straights, and special “bombs,” with each play needing to beat the previous one unless a player passes. Bombs and Joker combinations can suddenly overturn a trick, creating dramatic momentum swings and making timing and hand management critical.

What makes Guandan unique is its “level” system. Partnerships start at Level 2 and try to climb all the way to Ace by winning hands. The current level changes card strength each round, and the two heart cards of the current level act as wild cards, allowing creative combinations and powerful plays. Because partners coordinate without openly communicating, success depends heavily on reading the table, supporting your teammate, conserving bombs, and deciding when to attack or defend. The game is easy to learn at a basic level, but its depth, shifting strategy, and explosive turns have made it one of the most popular competitive card games in China.
